These department store loads are mixed general merchandise truckloads and are department store returns. If you are an “Off Price” discount retailer catering to the masses, this is the truckload of merchandise you are looking for. With these department store return loads, you could find just about anything that could be found in most of the major department stores. One of the frustrations that we continue to hear is that most of the department store loads available today have the “higher end” merchandise sorted out of the loads. You see many of the vendors and distributors are sorting out or removing the “higher end” merchandise from the department store loads and selling it or auctioning it at a much higher recovery. This is good for the vendor but not for you. You need the profits from the “higher end” items and your store needs those items also. Think Variety! Current Industry studies have shown that the average consumer will not return a second time to an “off-price” department store unless there is enough variety to draw and keep them.

Every item on these general merchandise truckloads is handled and scanned at the processing centers and a manifest is generated. Most of the obviously “un-sellable” merchandise is discarded during the processing. As the individual items are being processed, a label is applied that has a brief description of the item, and a retail value. This dramatically reduces the amount of work required to put your truckload of department store merchandise on the shelf and ready for your customers. Now some of the items will not be in their original packaging, and therefore cannot be scanned. In this event, the item is given a “generic description” and a value is assigned to the item. This value is usually much lower than the actual retail value of the item and because your cost for the salvage truckload is based on a percentage of retail, you are paying much much less for these items (We call these Cherries).
