汽车横向稳定杆是汽车设计师为了降低车辆的固有频率，改善行驶的平顺性，将现代轿车上悬架的垂直刚度值设得很低，这样虽然提高了汽车的舒适性，但也会起副作用，使汽车的侧倾角刚度值也随之降得很低，结果在汽车转弯时产生较大的车身侧倾角，且前后悬架侧倾角刚度匹配不合理，影响了操纵稳定性。为了解决这一矛盾，就在悬架中采用横向稳定杆来提高悬架的侧倾角刚度，调整了前后悬架侧倾角刚度比值，以保证汽车具有良好的行驶稳性。因此，稳定杆只是通过提高悬架的侧倾角刚度，间接提高了车辆在行驶中的稳定性。
